Kate Wood and Margaret Donat participated in the second annual "Quick Draw" at the Design Alaska’s Wild Art Walk at Creamer’s Field on Sunday, June 5, 2011. Six local artists (Margaret Donat, Kate Wood, Gael Murakami, Randall Compton, Daniel Kennedy and Neal Johnson) raced against the clock to start and finish original paintings in one hour! UAF Chancellor Brian Rogers led an outcry auction where each painting was auctioned off to benefit the Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge and The Fairbanks Summer Fine Arts Festival. Great fun was had by all! |

Alaskan Wildlife in Scrimshaw by John MajakThe Fairbanks Daily Newsminer ran a wonderful piece about John and his work on April 1st. Link to the article here. John put on a great show with exquisite pieces of work on Friday night, taking the time to explain his process to anyone who asked. |
Spring Is In The AirSpring was definitely in the air (at least it was within the Co-Op Plaza) during our First Friday event in partnership with the Georgeson Botanical Garden Society. The Gallery was blooming with flowers and spring themed art for the event. The spring themed art is on display for the remainder of the month of March. Nikki Kinne and May-Le Ng both volunteered to donate portions of their sales from the Friday and Saturday to the Georgeson Botanical Gardens. |

Expressions Workshop with Nikki KinneThere was a fine turnout to Nikki's water color workshop with participants learning the secrets to capturing expression in their paintings. Moriah was one such participant. She succesfully completed a beautiful painting of her cousin that she'd started in class and also went on to paint a little girl with a teddy bear. We're so proud to hear that our students are taking home what they've learned and are creating wonderful work with so much enthusiasm!

20 January 2011 Mouse Felting Bee During Recent WorkshopKate Wood's basic needle felting class was held on 15 January 2011. The six students completed five colorful felted mice and one cat all in. It was a fun class and the students went home with valentine colored pink, fuchsia, lavender and mauve wool to continue felting while it was still fresh in their minds. Hearts are currently in the making. Fortunately, the box of BAND-Aids was only opened twice throughout the four hour class, using those six inch barbed needles can be painful! |
7 January 2011 Closet Artists: A Sucessful First Friday Event! Our January First Friday Art Exhibition was entitled "Closet Artists" and was an open invitation to everyone of any age, talent or media to submit pieces of their work to the exhibition. It was wonderful to see so much community participation in this event, with long lines of people waiting to drop off their items on Thursday. There were 75 entries, many of which were composed of multiple pieces. More than half the entries were by artists that had never shown their work anywhere before. An outpouring of family, friends, neighbors and co-workers in support of their artist was a wonderful reflection of Fairbanks' supportive for the arts. Over 300 people attended the First Friday event. What a turn out! The encouragement, support and educational advice provided by Co-Op Arts members sets the Closet Artists show apart from any other Fairbanks community show. The show focusses on creativity rather than the age or artistic training of entrants. Encouraging children to create and be accepted and displayed alongside adults' work gives a strong message to children to take their work seriously. We hope that this will encourage investment in creativity and art at a young age. Congratulations to Urszula Morun for winning the People's Choice contest. Urszula's work is on display in the Co-Op Arts Gallery through 2 February 2011. KTVF-TV 11 presented a short piece about the night at 11PM on Friday 7 January and KXD-TV 13 presented a piece about the night at 6PM on 10 January 2011. The night was so sucessful that the Closet Artists event will become an annual event. |
